'Hancock' rules in the Philippines, gets P46M on its first weekend

Will Smith's Hancock registered a revenue of $66 million in the US last weekend, to become Smith's 2nd best opening weekend ever after his 2007 hit I Am Legend with $77 million.

In the Philippines, Hancock also makes a record and can be considered a box office success.

The movie $1,009,285 or 45.9 million pesos, one of the best opening weekend sales in the country this 2008.

Filipino movie Caregiver has been dropped from the Top 10 last weekend, but it now has a total gross estimated revenue of 139.5 million pesos.

However, comparing it to the earnings of last year's smash hit One More Chance, Caregiver's total is far behind and could still be overtaken by one or two Tagalog releases which are yet to be shown on the coming months.

Van Pojas leading Mykiru's Popularity Poll

Cebuano hottie Van Louelle Pojas is leading the Popularity Poll that I conducted since the start of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2.

Just like in Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus, it is one indicator that Van is going to secure an important spot in the Grand Dream Night.

Following Van are Hansen Nichols and Cris Pastor, two other best-looking scholars in the Academy.

Sheng Belmonte's expulsion last night was no surprise because in Mykiru's poll, she is one of the least popular scholar of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2. She was pitted against Jet Singh, who is more popular than her.

Despite being expelled already, Chivas Malunda is still one of the Top 5 Most Popular scholars.

After being the Star Scholar for three consecutive weeks, Liezel Garcia is gaining grounds and now ranks after Cris as most favored female scholar.

It's safe to say that Bea Muñoz, Iñaki Ting and Christian Alvear have lesser followings as compared to the other scholars, as far as popularity poll is concerned.

Here's the partial results of Mykiru's Popularity Poll:

Van Louelle Pojas (129) 15%
Hansen 'Sen' Nichols (103) 12%
Cristina 'Cris' Pastor (79) 9%
Jay 'Bugoy' Bogayon (75) 9%
Chivas Anton Malunda (72) 8%
Maria Liezel Garcia (70) 8%
Apple Abarquez (57) 7%
Jovanni 'Bunny' Malunda (54) 6%
Miguel Mendoza (43) 5%
Laarni Losala (42) 5%
Ranjit 'Jet' Singh (31) 4%
Jun Ross Dio (28) 3%
Michelle 'Shen' Belmonte (21) 2%
Beatriz 'Bea' Muñoz (19) 2%
Rafael Ignacio 'Iñaki' Ting (15) 2%
Christian Alvear (14)

You can still cast your vote at the right sidebar of this page.

'Dayo' makes it to MMFF 2008

Another 'truly Pinoy' animated movie, Dayo has been selected as one of the official 8 entries in the 34th Metro Manila Film Festival this December.

Produced by Cutting Edge Productions, Dayo features voices of Nash Aguas, Katrina 'Hopia' Legaspi, Michael V., Peque Gallaga, Laurice Guillen and Johnny Delgado.

Dayo will just be the 3rd full length animation film to hit Philippine theaters but it has been created even before 'Urduja' was shown last month.

What makes Dayo different from Urduja? Urduja is hand-drawn (traditional) while Dayo is paperless (digital).

Here's Dayo's initial trailer:

Why celebrity relationships fail

In time with the controversies about marriage troubles between Madonna and Guy Ritchie, Anne Ichikawa of Shine blogs about why some celebrities do have failed relationships.

She gave four explanations with corresponding examples of celebrity ex-couples.

Rumors have been tiptoeing around about marriage troubles between Madonna and her husband of seven years, director Guy Ritchie. It seemed to everyone that the once wild, pointy bra-wearing Queen of Pop had settled down for good with her Brit, with her finding Kabbalah, doing massive amounts of yoga, and adopting little David from Malawi. However, all indications point towards a confirmation of a divorce, with word that she's hiring Paul McCartney's divorce lawyer, Fiona Shackleton. Thus, another celebrity marriage bites the dust. Sad, sad, sad. All relationships and marriages face their challenges, but in the world of Hollywood and fame, there are booby traps left and right from being surrounded by gorgeous men and women, having nasty rumors spread, and over publicized romances.

After the jump, pitfalls that celebrity couples face that us average Joe's and Jane's don't have to deal with.

Temptation: the other woman/man
Case in point: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
Imagine yourself in Jennifer Aniston's shoes: your husband is the hottest man alive and he's leaving to shoot a movie with the hottest woman alive, Angelina Jolie. The set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith proved to be too much quality time between Brad and Angelina and those pouty lips were no match for Jen's toned arms. Temptation abounds in the sea of endless beauty that is Hollywood.

Over-publicity
Case in point: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez
There was a time in 2002 where you couldn't turn on the TV or read a magazine without seeing or hearing that dreaded, stupid compound word, "Bennifer." They were the ultimate publicity whores, which probably was the end cause of their broken off engagement. The couple was overexposed in a bad way, resulting in the embarrassing, box office failure, Gigli. No wonder both J.Lo and Affleck try to keep a low profile with their now husband and wife, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Garner.

One is more famous
Case in point: Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe
Reese Witherspoon is America's darling. She was charming and hilarious in Legally Blonde and won an Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter in Walk the Line. Her husband...er, what's his name? Exactly. Ryan Phillippe was suffering from a severe drought of good movie roles, and little fame. Perhaps he felt neglected and emasculated? Whatever the real issue was, he cheated on her with actress Abbie Cornish and the World's population collectively thought: downgrade.

Overexposed by Reality TV
Case in point: Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
They were like the Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez of the millennium, except she was the wacky blond and he was the straight laced boy next door. Neither one of them was very famous before the run of their reality show Newlyweds, that documented their marriage, showcasing her ditziness and his good guy demeanor. It really catapulted Simpson to celebrity status, inflated her ago, and resulted in her leaving poor Nick. Another couple gone bad due to reality TV: Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler in MTV's, Meet the Barkers.

Are celebrity couples doomed to fail because of the nature of the industry they work in? How would it be possible to avoid these pitfalls?

Pete Wentz goes "out" from the closet

For its August 2008 issue, OUT Magazine has Fall Out Boy frontman and Ashlee Simpson's hubby Pete Wentz on its cover.

On an in-depth interview with the said gay magazine, Pete Wentz talks about his sexuality and considers himself a "fag".

"When I'm going down the street I get called a fag all the time. We have iPhones, and I'm still getting called the same names as when I was 13," Pete says.

"There is a sense of self-empowerment or recapturing who you are by people calling you 'fag,' and being like, 'Yeah, I am a fag.' Even though you're not. What does somebody respond? That dude has nothing to say about that again.”

Pete, who is an expectant father, also shares about kissing men.

"When I said that I make out with dudes, there was a slight sense of sexual rebellion in that. And I probably even made it a bigger deal than it was," he says

He also confesses that he had his first kiss with a guy when he was with 16 and the last time he did it was 7 years ago. He's now 29.

And how about his male celebrity crush? He admits having a big stupid crush on John Mayer.

Pete also talks about his "equipment".

“I really don’t think it’s an attractive quality. That’s what it comes down to. I don’t even like my own. Like, I really don’t like it. I don’t like anything about it.”
